How to clean a silver necklace and this includes how to clean your silver jewelry

If you do a Google search for “How to clean a silver necklace” you might find a whole bunch of “home remedies” that might or might not work.

If you would like to skip directly to my choice then please scroll down.

Here are a few snippets that I picked up when I put in my search on Google – ”How to clean a silver necklace”.

This one with a combination of soda, salt and aluminum foil:

Mix a VERY hot bath of water with some baking soda and salt in it. Put in a sheet of aluminum foil, shiny side up, then place your medallion on top of that. Leave it in until any tarnish clears.

Here is one that also adds some vinegar to the mix:

Mix the baking soda, salt and vinegarMix 1 tablespoon of salt with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Place the mixture in the bowl on top of the tinfoil. Slowly add in 1/2 cup of vinegar. Stir the ingredients until the salt and baking soda dissolve.

And you can give it a stir if you wish:

I use sodium bicarbonate and aluminium foil in warm water. If you stir it around a bit it works even better.

Maybe your jewelry has indigestion so this one says use Alka-Seltzer – look I am not saying that this does not work but it does seem a strange one to me:

Alka-Seltzer: Let your jewelry soak in a glass of Alka-Seltzer for a few minutes. Wipe dry with a clean cloth, and watch your gem sparkle like new.

You can have a party with this one, just do not drink all the beer yourself:

Beer: Pour some lager on a soft cloth and gently rub your jewelry with it. Use a clean cloth to dry.

Or if you do not drink beer then how about Club Soda:

Soak your diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds in club soda to give them a bright sheen. Simply place them in a glass full of club soda and let them soak overnight.

If you want more flavor with your cleaning job:

Let ketchup do the work of shining tarnished silver. If your ring, bracelet, or earring has a smooth surface, dunk it in a small bowl of ketchup for a few minutes.

And finally you can put a bright sparkly smile on your jewelry’s dial with this one:

Has your diamond ring lost its sparkle? Here’s how to clean jewelry using denture tablets: Drop the tablet into a glass containing a cup of water.

Look I am not running down the “Home recipes” listed above, they might well work to a more or lesser degree of success and I cannot say that they do not work as I have not tried any of them out.

But when it comes to messing with concoctions on precious and valuable jewelry and some that might be valuable heirlooms, then I would personally only use a purpose made product with a proven track record.
